An experiment is described which is designed to investigate the theory of optimal foraging in insect parasitoids. The data show good correspondence with the predictions of a new model; they are discussed in relation to estimation procedures used by Hubbard & Cook (1978). The role of host exploitation in blurring the relationship between the model and the data, and the difficulty of interpreting the goodness-of-fit between model and data are discussed. none
