comment:
The numbers of hymenopterous parasitoids trapped on sticky traps attached to bark beetle-infested stems of pine and cypress were compared with those reared from stem sections of the same trees. The relative abundance of the Chalcidoidea Calosota aestivalis, Cerocephala eccoptogasteri, Eurytoma morio, Heydenia pretiosa, Metacolus azureus, M. unifasciatus, Rhaphitelus maculatus and Roptrocerus xylophagorum was greater on traps, than that determined by rearing form the stem, whereas the contrary was the case for Braconidae Dendrosoter caenopachoides and D. protuberans. It is suggested that the different abundance of parasitoids recorded by the two collection methods is due to specific parasitoid behaviour during host detection. Therefore, the use of sticky traps is not recommended as a method for abtaining accurate data on the abundance of bark beetle parasitoids.
